Top ten tips to keep your wedding environmentally friendly

Marriage is a commitment to another person, but what if you’re also committed to reducing your carbon footprint? You can reduce the environmental impact of your big day by following our tips for turning your white wedding green.

1. Invitations

Rather than send out paper invitations, why not send online invitations by email, completely removing the need to use natural resources.

If you need to send traditional paper invitations, stick to recycled paper and cut back on the frills and ribbons.

2. Flowers

Tulips from Amsterdam? Think of the fossil fuels used to deliver fresh-cut flowers. An excellent way to keep your wedding eco-friendly is to find locally produced flowers. Why not use potted plants to dress the tables instead, which your guests can take away with them for their homes or gardens?

3. Invite fewer people

It might seem harsh but inviting fewer people to your wedding will reduce the environmental impact of your big day considerably. Alternatively, reduce CO² by encouraging guests to share a car wherever possible.

4. Venue

Rather than holding your reception at a remote stately home 40 miles from the church or registry office, try to find somewhere close by. Even better, hold your wedding in a central location where your guests can easily make use of public transport.

5. Wedding dress

Vintage dresses have been a stylish choice for many brides in recent years, but wearing a vintage dress is good for the environment at the same time as being chic.

If you’ve got your heart set on walking down the aisle in a contemporary wedding dress, you can still dramatically reduce the carbon footprints you leave behind you by hiring a dress for the day rather than buying one.

6. Food

Choosing a meal that uses local and organic produce is a great way to immediately reduce the environmental impact of your wedding. Using local and organic produce also means you’re feeding your guests with good, fresh food and supporting local producers at the same time.

7. Drink

We are in a golden age for small breweries and British winemakers and sourcing locally produced beverages will keep your party thirst-free and eco-friendly.

8. Wedding gifts

If your guests are buying you wedding gifts, why not request they only buy energy-efficient gifts. Energy efficient appliances will go on reducing harm to the environment long after the confetti has settled.

9. Wedding favours

Rather than traditional and environmentally damaging gifts, you could give out seedling trees as wedding favours that will help to reduce CO² in the atmosphere for many years to come.

10. Honeymoon

Rather than leaving global-dimming vapour trails in your wake as you soar off in a passenger jet for a week in the sun, do your bit for the environment and the local economy by honeymooning somewhere closer to home.

Following some of our top ten tips for a greener wedding can ensure you big day leaves a tiniest of carbon footprints.

BabySpa | Baby Care Products Review

As a mom I love to make sure my little ones have the best and a little pampering never hurts either. This is what BabySpa aims to help me and other parents do with their line of natural skin care products designed with your little ones in mind. They offer a variety of products to coincide with two stages: Stage 1 – Newborn to Crawler and Stage 2 – Walker to 4 years +. The products they offer vary from shampoos, conditioners to lotion and even Nourishing Massage Oil.

My very active little ones are  2 and 4 so I was provided with two Stage 2 products to review.

Nourishing Massage Oil

The massage oil includes the following ingredients:

Grape Seed Oil: hypo-allergenic, hydrates and softens
Avocado Oil: excellent emollient, rich in Vitamins A & E
Jojoba Oil: provides all-day hydration, rich in Vitamin C
Nyamplung Oil: virgin & certified organic, soothes and softens, optimizes sunscreen efficiency

There is no odor or fragrance added to the oil. Baby Spa offers some great tips and 10-step instructional guide  on how to give your little a relaxing massage.

Moisturizing Body Lotion

The lotion includes:

Organic Aloe: antibacterial effects, heals and conditions the skin
Calendula Oil: soothes and protects the skin
Grape Seed Oil: hypo-allergenic, moisturizes and nourishes
Nyamplung Oil: virgin & certified organic, soothes and softens, optimizes sunscreen efficiency
Kizis™: organic extract, supports the skin’s natural defense mechanisms

The lotion can be used for both stage 1 and stage 2 little ones. The scent is very pleasant citrus scent.

Overall: I feel that both products fit the needs for my little ones very well. I am happy to see that more companies are turning to more natural ingredients in the products they create for children and adults alike.

QBedding Bamboo Charcoal Fiber Pillow Review

I have a fused vertebrae in my back so I am often looking for not just a good mattress but a good pillow. I often find myself in a battle with my pillows for a more comfortable way of sleeping but often I feel like I lost when I wake up in the morning with a stiff neck and back.

So when I was recently given the opportunity to review a product from QBedding, they offer a large selection of Green Pillows that are designed to suit various wants and needs. This is exactly the purpose of the Bamboo Charcoal Fiber Pillow and it is a pillow that I have never seen or heard of before my review.

When it comes to design alone the pillow is very unique. On one side the pillow has the look and feel of a traditional pillow, flip it over and that is a whole other story all together. It is designed to cradle the neck and the head. The pillow in its entirety is very soft thanks to the 100% cotton twill.

So my first question was what makes the  Bamboo Charcoal Fiber Pillow so special?

Flipping it over and you can definitely tell what makes the pillow so unique. I have tried various health pillows to help me get a more restful night sleep but I did not know what to really think about pillow with Charcoal fibers inside. The fibers inside the pillow are said to help you relax and get a more restful sleep naturally.

Bamboo charcoal is a product that is made of carbonized bamboo which is formed when bamboo is heated in an oven at over 1000 degrees. The bamboo charcoal promotes a naturally healthy sleep as it has the ability to absorb impurities and moisture from the environment.

What I like most about the pillow is that the bamboo sachet that holds the charcoal is completely removable so it can be transferred to your own pillow and it makes the QBedding pillow easily machine washable. The bamboo charcoal fiber pillows’ thick material provides for the perfect mixture of soft and firm.

I have been using the pillow comfortably now for the past few days and I have noticed that when i wake up my neck and back are not as stiff as it is when i use my other pillows and I find that I do not have double up my pillows at night when i sleep.

Cost: The Bamboo Charcoal pillow can be purchased directly from QBedding with a retail of $41.99. QBedding has provided me with a great discount to share with my Organic Mommy Today readers:

Save on your purchase of the Bamboo Charcoal Fiber Pillow by entering in code FIRSTBUY to save 15% off an order with a value of $50 or more and shipping is always free with Qbedding for 48 contiguous states.

The current clean air Issue in congress:

Lobbyists and corporations are trying desperately to persuade and/or encourage politicians take apart the Clean Air Act and EPA. Visit Moms Clean Air Force to read more about the dangers of mercury poisoning and other air pollutants.

Take action and fight for our right to have clean air.

Moms are joining together, to come out in strength for our kids’ right to clean air — just as our parents fought for us, forty years ago, to get the Clean Air Act signed into law by President Richard Nixon. Moms Clean Air Force is nonpartisan–because clean air should be more important than politics.

Bring awareness to the dangers that coal-fired plants have on children even while they are still in the womb making it one of the leading health risks during pregnancy.

Coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of toxic mercury

Something I learned is that this is why my OB-GYN warned me against eating albacore (white) tuna when I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago and why my midwife warned me against it when I was pregnant with my daughter 2 years ago.

Natural House Product Review

Logo

Natural House brings you a natural and non-toxic way of keeping the dirtiest areas of your home free from germs and other harmful bacteria. I have always hated using harsh chemicals to clean around my house, so I have always been one to find natural or homemade home cleaning remedies. Natural House has a product line that consists of:

Trashy is a cleaner for diaper pails and trash cans. Trash cans have always been a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and worst of all odors from past meals. I do not have too much issue with the trash can inside the house but I have been using it like crazy on the larger trash can outside of the home. I used to hate walking past it because the smell would be horrible even without trash actually in the can. I was for sure not going to stick my hand in that with a sponge or rag to clean it out. That is what makes Trashy so great to have on hand with its no touch formula you can dry it yourself if you want or just let it air dry before putting a new bag inside it.

If you have a garbage disposal then you know how sometimes over time it can develop an order to it. This is where Sinky comes in and will make you say “what odor?” which is what my husband actually said. When our disposal starts to get an odor I like to pour some baking soda and vinegar down the drain and it clears it right up after a few doses, but with using Sinky it cleared up the smell faster.

Flushy is a 3-in-1, it cleans the toilet bowl, drain and the septic. We have pretty hard water so there is a constant ring around the toilet bowl the probiotics within Natural House products are chipping away at the build up and ensuring a cleaner toilet and cleaner septic tank.

Natural House products can be picked up for $4.99 and come with a 30-day supply.

Product Review: The Amazing Mat

Between the kids, my husband, the dogs and myself going in and out of the house, I worry about the stuff that comes in on their shoes, the germs, bacteria and whatever is outside on the ground will then end up on my carpet throughout the house. Generally I will have family and guests remove their shoes at the door but this sometimes will get put to the wayside when we are bringing in groceries or even in a rush to get in the house from the rain.

I will not lie I was kind of skeptical about trying out the Amazing Mat. A mat that can not just keep my floors and carpet clean but germ free? Seriously?

Before I go into my review let me tell you a little bit about the Amazing Mat and how it works:

The Amazing Mat is not an ordinary rubber, fabric or grass door mat. It is constructed of separate layers of specially designed clear “sticky” sheets that collect dirt and germs when stepped on. When the top one gets dirty, simply peel it off (along with the dirt) and expose a new sheet. The mat is safe and easy to walk on for adults, children and pets.

  • Save your health – provides a cleaner, more sanitary environment
    for your entire family
  • Save time – less dust means less vacuuming, mopping and cleaning!
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed – cut your cleaning time in half, or
    your money back
  • Save the environment – recycle used sheets with your other plastics

My Thoughts On The Amazing Mat:

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out the Amazing Mat and the first thing I have to say is that I love the design that I got which was the oriental:

A high traffic area in my home is the front door and since sometimes we have issues remembering to take off our shoes I figured this would be the best place to give the mat a try. I was surprised by the amount dirt that the mat picked up. It makes me feel better having the Amazing Mat I it is like my floors are cleaner. I am always using antibacterial wipes on the door knobs and counter tops so having the option to have an antibacterial mat for the floor sits well with me as a mom. Don’t worry the mat is not a one hit wonder, once the top sheet is full there are 29 more sheets to take its place.

The only con to the mat is that it is sticky and it took a bit for us all to get used to especially the kids that kept wanting to step on it because as my son says “it feels funny”. However, as the mat got more and more dirty the stickiness went away and that when I knew it was time to change it so the “funny feeling” served it purpose.

The Amazing Mat can be purchased online at The Amazing Mat for $29.95 and the refills are $19.99 for 1 30-day supply and $29.95 for 3 30-day refills.

When you do your shopping to buy the Amazing Mat use  the code SHIPNOW when you checkout to get Free Shipping. Valid through 3/15/12.

Dr Sharps Oral Care Products Review

I was recently sent some of Dr. Sharps oral care products to review. Dr. Sharp provides oral care products that are Fluoride-free, alcohol free, sls-free, paraben-free, vegan and most of all made from sustainable material. It also really great tasting, this was a concern because I have used some natural oral care products that have tasted absolutely horrible or had a horrible aftertaste. Thankfully Dr. Sharps oral care products produce non of that.

For my review I was sent the entire line of Dr. Sharp Special Family Package  which included:

  • Strawberry Cream
  • Fresh Mint
  • Green Tea (my favorite) Toothpaste
  • Fresh Mint Mouthwash
After trying all of the flavors…yes even the one for children…I overall like the flavor and was spared the unfavorable aftertaste  of other products. The ingredients as mentioned before are all natural. In the childrens’ toothpaste there is Bambusa stem to clean the teeth and carrageenan to protect and promote healthy gums. Now the ingredients for the mouthwash is what actually surprised me. I use Witch Hazel for my face I would never have thought that it would be an ingredient for mouthwash and you can definitely taste the Witch Hazel through the mint but it is not something that is completely over-powering.
Dr. Sharps oral care products is a brand that I am sure my family and I will be using for a long time to come. The entire family package can be purchased on the Dr. Sharp website for around $40.

Now the first questions that came to mind for me was why Fluoride-free? Check out this video to see what doctors and health officials have to say:

So after watching the above video I would love to know your thoughts and/or opinions on Fluoride-free oral care.
