When we moved into our home at the end of last month we were looking at every possible way to save money our electric bill in our rented condo was our 3rd highest bill at around $160-$170. So we began looking at better lighting solutions for our home, since even though we teach our toddlers to turn off the light when they leave a room one will inevitably get left on, especially if our oldest who is 4 leaves the light on in the hallway when he gets up to the use the potty.
Now even though we use energy-efficient light bulbs in our home (usually the generic brand), my husband and were curious to see what kind of difference the GE Energy Smart bulbs would do. Now the only room in our home that we had to really change out was the porch lights those bulbs had been the same regular 60-Watt bulbs that were here when we moved in.

The only worry that went through our mind was cost. I had never really priced out the GE Energy Smart bulbs so I was curious to see how much they were. To our surprise the Energy Smart bulbs were really affordable. The ones we purchased were $11.96 for two, once we finally get around to putting up the flood lights outside, my husband has some wiring to do this weekend so he can install the light fixtures on the outside of the house, then we can go back and get those for $12.44 for one 26-Watt bulb. So making a quick double-check around the house to see which other lights we had that needed changing and happy to see that the only ones we needed were the outside bulbs.

Yeah I know…standing in the aisle I was surprised at the variety of light bulbs available! It would not hurt to do a little research before heading to the store as the selection could be overwhelming. I went to the GE Lighting website to find some really helpful information, before making my way to the store.

These would be perfect for the small patio we have off the back of our house and for the price I could not pass that up. So all together once we picked up the lights for the patio and next week when we pick up the lights for the backyard we would have spent a little over $60. We have a month before we will get our first energy bill so I have to see the difference our current changes made but I went to the really informative GE lighting calculator, this showed that with the current bulbs we have and the ones we have to buy for the outside of our home we would save $131.25 a year and $719.20 over the life of the bulbs.

In a month or so be on the lookout for the a new post showing the change in our energy bill. Until then, be sure to stop by GE on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about saving green by going green with your home lighting.
